RECIPE: Natural Body Butter

 

I am about more than just good food! I like to ensure that what goes in my mouth is equally matched by what goes on my skin. Both my husband and I suffer from the occasional skin irritation and as soon as we started using this homemade face and body cream, these reduced dramatically. Enriched with coconut oil, aloe vera, olive oil and shea butter, this body butter sinks into the skin to provide moisture and settle any irritations fast! Ensuring our bodies get adequate moisture is important. Equally as important is the need to use products that aren’t filled with chemicals and harmful ingredients. Many of the products on the shelf are filled with nasty fragrances, mineral oils and carcinogens – all of which can be detrimental to our health. This easy recipe can be whipped up in the kitchen and used on the face and body. Full of anti-microbial and nourishing ingredients, you will feel great about using this on your skin.

 

  • 1 cup/250g Shea Butter
  • 2/3 cup/165g coconut oil
  • 1cup/250g Aloe Vera
  • 1 part Olive/Avocado oil
  • 10-15 Drops of Essential oils of choice (optional)

 

  1. Melt coconut oil and shea butter in a double boiler. You can create this by putting the ingredients in a bowl and then placing the bowl in a pan of simmering water.
  2. Remove from heat once melted and let the mixture cool until it’s opaque (to speed this is you can put it in the fridge, but don’t let it become solid.)
  3. Next, add the remaining ingredients and the coconut/shea mix to a mixer bowl, and whip until ingredients are well combined, and the mixture is light and fluffy (about 5-10 minutes.) It’s finished when the body butter can stick to a spoon when held upside down.
  4. Transfer to a small container or jar and store in a cool place.

 

 

I purchase all of the organic ingredients online or from a health food store and it makes us about 4 containers worth – lasting us months! A little goes a long way.

When adding essential oils, my favourites are frankincense, lavender and/or lemon.
