Learn something new

Do you want to improve your health and life longevity? The answer of course would have to be yes – right? Huffington Post states that research shows that when people are intensely engaged in doing and learning new things, their wellbeing and happiness can blossom.

Studies suggest that the positive effects of education on happiness and wellbeing are (but not limited to):

higher income

improved health behaviours

greater emotional resilience

increased social capabilities

better physical health.

So should you flick from this tab and begin to Google expensive universities and institutions? Not necessarily. It isn’t always the most self-serving option. I am not dissing or discrediting tertiary or post-graduate education. I, myself am in fact enrolled in my masters degree. I am always learning so I set this resolution to pursue learning linked to my passion and interests – not my current career path. It is my opinion that we achieve a greater sense of achievement when we engage in learning that is aligned with passion. I am lucky enough to be one of the lucky ones who is passionate about their career. I love my university studies because I can directly apply them to a job that I like. But what gets me salivating in my down time  is learning about health, wellness and nutrition.

Knowledge is power and control over your path in life. Years ago, I became very unwell after a visit to Morocco. My insides were torn apart and I wasn’t getting better after a prolonged period of time. I can’t tell you how many different doctors and specialists I saw over a 3 year period. All of which offered me narrow minded opinions that were, in my eyes, a stock standard response to the influx of people that drag themselves through their clinics everyday. These people were merely products of the messy lives we live as humans in this day and age (but that’s another post and could take me pages to hash out!). All that came of these visits to a bunch of “health professionals” was a dent in my bank account. Once I decided to make the effort to take control of MY health, learn about exactly what was happening to MY body and how I could tailor strategies and approaches to support MY health and wellbeing, I instantly saw results. Since beginning my Happiness Project, I have found myself learning more and more about how to improve happiness and increase my fulfillment with my own life following my commandments to ‘learn,’ ‘ask questions,’ and ‘listen.’ Moving forward, I wanted to learn even more about all the things that can improve my quality of life overall.

In order to learn more in this months resolution, I planned to read books and journal articles, listen to podcasts, audiobooks and engage in conversations with professionals about my interests at the time. The interests that lay at the forefront of my mind included: female and gut health, nutrition, hormone imbalances, spirituality (yoga and meditation) and holistic health practices. By keeping my learning connected to things that got me buzzed, I predicted that learning would become more of a self-serving passionate experience, as opposed to something I had to do to please anyone other than myself.

Plugging learning into my day began from the early morning. I walk every morning and decided this was the optimal time to learn. I can’t exactly read as I walk, so I took to listening to podcasts to learn more about things that made me happy.

Alongside my morning podcast time, I read before bed and at every free opportunity. In the last month, I have learnt so much information. Information that has helped both me and my husband to feel well both physically and mentally. This kind of knowledge is so serving to many people around me. I have a number of friends who battle gut health issues, infertility or emotional woes. I have a number of them who drink up advice from me and who are willing to take steps towards optimising their health. On the flip side – I discovered was while knowledge is power, it is virtually useless when trying to discuss, promote issues or help others who aren’t open to the same ideas as you or willing to accept help. Many people are stuck in a stale mindset where they believe everything that the media, big corporations or “medical professionals” tell them. Why the inverted commas? As mentioned above, many doctors are promoting messages that serve big drug companies, governments or industries (e.g. wheat, dairy etc). What I have noticed is that what most people do is follow shonky advice instead of opening their eyes up to the experiences of real people around them. Yes, science is amazing and has done some fabulous things.

What my new knowledge has taught me is that we shouldn’t always believe everything we are told. Instead I choose to value the opinions, studies and ideas of those who aren’t out to make a buck, who believe in a holistic approach and take into account the experiences of those who they work with on a daily basis.

I want to live a life where I take the necessary preventative measures necessary to ensure I live an optimal and healthy life. Moving forward with this resolution into upcoming months it is my aim to set a goal to read at least one book a month that is linked to health and wellbeing and continue listening to podcasts every day in order to engage in learning to fuel my passions. Not only do I want to learn from these sources, I plan to engage with reliable health professionals and continue to grow my knowledge base. It is my goal in the next couple of years to begin training as a Yoga teacher and/or Health coach. Ensuring I build a solid foundation of self-taught knowledge first will enable me to thrive in either of these given paths. Either of these professions will not only follow something that I am passionate about, but will also allow me to serve others.
